Carbon Pleated Filters for Contaminants/Odor Removal

Air Filters Incorporated’s Astro-Sorb™ carbon pleated filters provide superior odor and particulate capture by using activated carbon, combined with a non-woven polyester media. Unlike the typical coal-based carbon, the activated carbon is made with a coconut shell-based material. The carbon opens up when heated, making it more porous and giving it a larger surface area. The synthetic media is then chemically enriched with 200 grams/sq. meter of coconut-based activated carbon.

The Astro-Sorb™ is highly efficient while effectively capturing and removing air pollutants and odors. The Astro-Sorb™ captures and traps VOCs, gases, and vapors through the process of chemical adsorption. Activated carbon pleated air filters act as a “sponge” to harmful gases and vapors, effectively stopping and trapping contaminants that can bypass the human body’s natural defenses and cause illnesses. The Astro-Sorb™ is designed with residential and commercial HVAC industries in mind, with features including low-pressure drop, high dust holding capacity, and odor adsorption.

Carbon Filters

Air Filters, Inc.™ carries an extensive line of carbon air filters and impregnated carbon products.

Carbon has many benefits, one is its ability to remove odors. Bulk carbon is always the best for removing VOCs from a manufacturing process or PetroChem application.

Standard carbon or impregnated carbon, potassium or a blend can be added to any filter for specific applications.

Carbon Air Filters

How does an active carbon filter work?

Activated carbon filters use charcoal that is treated with oxygen to make the charcoal more absorbent. Oxygen opens millions of tiny pores in the carbon so that gases and odors are to be trapped and stopped from recirculating through the air.

What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon, also known as activated charcoal, is type of carbon that is processed to have lots of small pores to increase the surface area. Activated carbon acts like sponge and is used to purify, deodorize, and adsorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs), gas molecules, odors, smoke, and pollutants.

How is carbon activated?

There are two ways to activate carbon, chemical activation, and steam activation. Chemical activation is used primarily on materials like sawdust, wood, or peat and is achieved by degradation or dehydration. Steam activation is the more commonly used process and is generally used on coconut shell-based, wood-based, and coal-based carbons. Steam activation is achieved by carbonization and initial oxidation that is activated by steam.

What do carbon air filters remove from the air?

Carbon filters are designed to remove harmful gases, odors, smoke, cooking fumes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and more!

How do carbon air filters trap odors and gaseous pollutants?

Carbon air filters work through a process called adsorption, not to be confused with absorption. Adsorption is when gas molecules cling to the pores of the activated carbon. This adsorption process allows activated carbon to filter out gases, odors, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the air.

Drawbacks of using activated carbon filter:

  • Using activated carbon filters can be costly and inconvenient. It also can be hard to tell when carbon filters need to be replaced because there are no outward signs that the carbon is fully saturated.
  • Activated carbon filters don’t filter out particulate pollutants like dust, pet dander, or pollen. Unless it is standard pleated filter that is bonded to an activated carbon media; in which case, it would filter out odors and smoke as well as common air contaminants.

Should you use a pleated carbon filter?

Pleated carbon filters are great filters for when you have smoke, pet odors, and cooking odors that you want to get rid of. Using a carbon pleated filter that is bonded to a MERV 8, 11, or 13 rated media is a great solution for getting rid of smells and odors while also filtering out common airborne particulates.

Activated Carbon Filter Types:

Pleated Activated Carbon Filters

Pleated activated carbon filters are filters that use a granular activated carbon media that is bonded to either a MERV 6, 8, 11, or 13 rated synthetic media. The synthetic media is the same media that is used in standard pleated filters but with a carbon upgrade. The combination of the activated carbon and high efficiency synthetic media makes for a filter that effectively traps odors and smoke as well as airborne contaminants like dust, pollen, pet dander, and more. Activated pleated filters are great for environments where you need to trap pesky odors or smoke but also want to ensure you’re filtering common airborne pollutants too.

Bonded Carbon Panels and V-Cell Filters

Bonded carbon filters are available in a panel or v-cell style and are typically used in commercial and industrial applications. Bonded carbon panels and v-cells use a high-quality virgin coconut shell carbon that effectively removes and traps volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors. The bonded carbon used in Air Filters Incorporated’s panel and v-cell filters is virgin coconut shell carbon with a minimum 60 carbon tetrachloride activity (CTC) (ASTM D-3467). Which is the measurement of the activated carbon’s pore volume and is primarily used as a quality assurance test for activated carbon.

Flocked Honeycomb Carbon Panels and V-Cell Filters

Honeycomb carbon filters are available in a panel or v-cell style and are typically used in commercial and industrial applications. Honeycomb carbon panels and v-cells use honeycomb shaped kraft board that is flocked with activated carbon, effectively trapping, and controlling odors and harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The flocked activated carbon is virgin carbon that is impregnate with potassium hydroxide (KOH). The unique honeycomb shape allows for a low pressure drop.

Carbon Refillable Trays

Carbon refillable trays are manufactured using a galvanized, stainless steel, or painted steel frame with perforated face guards. Carbon refillable trays are ideal for commercial or industrial applications where removing odors, gases, and VOCs is required. Standard carbon, impregnated carbon, potassium, or a blend can be added to any refillable tray to suite your needs.
